LTEN Members Discuss ‘EQ vs. IQ’ at San Diego Mixer

By Dawn Brehm

A large group of LTEN members and their colleagues came out for the March 6, 2018, LTEN Network After Work mixer, held at the Andaz hotel in San Diego. The mixer was sponsored by ScienceMedia, Quantum Learning and Illuminate, and was the latest in the ongoing series of LTEN member events held throughout the United States.

Shaun McMahon of Illuminate and Michael Young of ScienceMedia were hosts for the mixer; representatives from Quantum were unable to attend. Shaun and MIchael welcomed attendees to the program and provided an overview of LTEN for the audience, as well as introducing the guest speaker.

Guest speaker at the event was Kirt Pfaff, who works in training and development for La Jolla Pharmaceuticals. In his presentation, “EQ vs. IQ: Which One Guarantees Business Success,” Kirt spoke with mixer attendees about understanding emotions to influence business environments, managing emotions and understanding the emotions of others. Kirt also enriched his presentation with several case study examples to help deliver the message.

Thanks to everyone who attended the event, to Shaun and Michael for hosting and to Kirt for his thought-provoking presentation. Thanks also to ScienceMedia, Quantum Learning and Illuminate for sponsoring the latest LTEN Network After Work mixer.

Emotional intelligence is finally getting the attention it deserves throughout different industries. While no approach is the panacea, my experience has been that behaviors/emotions enhance or destroy cultures, not IQ. That said, the ability to perceive, understand and manage emotions and behaviors is critical to developing strong relationships and cultures. A greater focus on developing emotionally intelligent behaviors with sales representatives would be extremely beneficial in helping them navigate the growing access challenges they face in the field. I know it was key to my success when I was in the field. Patrick
